'Lego' Blocks Take Touch Screens to 3D

Posted by Chaella On Wednesday, October 07, 2009

"Smart building blocks plus Microsoft's Surface interactive table-top computer have taken touch-screen interaction into the third dimension. Engineers or architects could use them to develop designs, or it could become a new kind of building toy.

Touch screens are becoming standard for smartphones and beginning to appear in personal computers too: last year, Microsoft launched Surface, a computer in the form of a table with a touch-screen top. But, as the name suggests, touch screens only work with direct contact.

Now, Patrick Baudisch, Torsten Becker and Frederik Rudeck at the Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam in Germany have lifted the interaction away from the screen. When their building blocks, or Luminos, are stacked to form complicated structures on top of a Surface screen, the computer can map the building as it grows.

Vertical Presence
Each Lumino block has a pattern on its base that identifies its 3D shape, and the Surface table can read them using its four internal cameras that peer up at the acrylic top. That means the computer can build up a 3D picture of what lies on its surface.

The Luminos can also make themselves known to the Surface when they're ... ...." ~ NewScientist

Virtual-world Disputes are Heading to Real-life Courtrooms

Posted by Chaella On Wednesday, October 07, 2009

"WHILE global economies have endured a torrid time of late, business is booming in the virtual economies of Second Life, Facebook and Everquest. As the economic boundaries between virtual and real worlds continue to blur, the supposedly liberated virtual worlds are now running up against some very real-world legal problems.

Financial analyst Piper Jaffray estimates that US citizens will spend $621 million in 2009 in virtual worlds; estimates of the Asian market are even larger. Research firm Plus Eight Star puts spending at $5 billion in the last year.

Over in Second Life, trade remains robust. The value of transactions between residents in the second quarter of this year was $144 million, a year-on-year increase of 94 per cent. With its users swapping virtual goods and services worth around $600 million per year, Second Life has the largest economy of any virtual world - which exceeds the GDP of 19 countries, including Samoa.

Thousands of users make money selling virtual goods from clothing and furniture to art and gazebos, as well as services such as virtual wedding planning, translation or architecture. Several hundred make thousands of dollars from the trade; the most successful have become millionaires." ~ NewScientist

Google Earth: Live Video Makes Cities Bustle!

Posted by Chaella On Saturday, September 26, 2009

Hello, Everyone!  Today's post features:

'Live Video Makes Google Earth Cities Bustle' by Vijaysree Venkatraman

"Virtual globes such as Google Earth or Microsoft Visual Earth provide great bird's-eye views of urban landscapes. But those streets are empty, transforming the world's cities into ghost towns.

Now a system that can draw on real-time video from traffic and surveillance cameras, or weather sensors, is set to change that. It populates virtual towns with cars, people and realistic skies.

The video above shows how computer scientists at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta put the idea into practice using video feeds from cameras around the city. Their augmented version of Google Earth incorporates sports scenes, traffic flows, the march of pedestrians and weather.

Surveillance Footage
The system looks out for moving objects in a video feed. Anything moving along a street is classified as a car and replaced with a randomly chosen 3D car model. Moving objects on sidewalks are replaced with human figures, which are animated with stock motion-capture data to make them walk.

Although surveillance cameras are used, no one's privacy is at stake because the models obscure identifying details such as a car's colour and licence plates, says Kihwan Kim, who led the research. "Every moving object is rendered symbolically," says Kim, who worked ..."

Video: Touch2O™ Faucet Technology

Posted by Chaella On Wednesday, September 09, 2009

Hello, Everyone! I'm so grateful Touch2O™ Technology is finally available for the residence in attractive design! I've been awaiting it everysince it's arrival for commercial properties. I'm speaking of the water faucet technology 'Touch2O Technology' by Delta Faucet. The following presentation features Touch2O™, which you may have seen on tv commercials earlier this summer.

"With Touch2O™ Technology it doesn’t matter if you have two full hands or 10 messy fingers, tap anywhere on the spout or handle and the water is running.

You’re sure to fall in love with just one touch. The intuitive tap technology enables you to turn the faucet on and off with just a touch — anywhere on the faucet’s body or handle.

So, when hands are messy during meal preparation or clean-up, Touch2O™ Technology helps reduce the spread of germs and bacteria — simply touch the faucet body with your wrist or forearm.

Touch2O™ Technology can also help you conserve water. As you prepare food or wash up in the sink, just tap the Touch2O™ faucet to keep water from running when you don’t need it. Then, just touch it again to start the water flowing again." ~ Delta

How to Use TweetDeck

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

TweetDeck [1] is a great desktop app for Twitter [2] power-users. Using TweetDeck, you can effectively follow many more people and topics than you would be able to do using the Twitter web interface or any of the other desktop apps.

Steps

  1. Go to the TweetDeck website [1] and install TweetDeck following the instructions there.
    • When you run the TweetDeck app the first time, give it your Twitter login and password.

  2. Look at the three default columns: All Friends, Replies and Direct Messages.
    • All Friends: This is the normal tweet stream that you see on the Twitter.com site or using most Twitter apps. This stream includes all updates from everyone you're following.
    • Replies: This is the stream of all tweets that include @YourNameHere where YourNameHere is your Twitter handle. This is the same as clicking on Replies on Twitter.com
    • Direct Messages: This is the stream of private messages sent to you through Twitter. It also includes private messages you send to others while using TweetDeck.

  3. Use the Search tool.
    • Click the search icon:
    • In the popup, put any customized search that you like, such as "wikiHow" or "AboutUs.org OR @AboutUs"
    • Now you have a new column with the stream of global tweets that matches your search.
    • You can add as many searches as you like.

  4. Use the Group tool.
    • Click the group icon:
    • Type a name for your group. For example: "Work" if you plan to see just your work colleagues, or "Chicago" if you want to see just your friends from Chicago.
    • You'll see a list of the people you're following. Click the checkbox next to each person that fits in this group for you.
    • After you click "Save Group", you'll see a new column with the stream of tweets from people in that group.
    • You can add as many groups as you like.

This video shows how to use some TweetDeck features that aren't covered in the article above.

How to Use Twhirl With Twitter

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

You are using Twitter more and more...but you have a couple of other micro-bloggers that you like to use as well. Well, maybe, with this article, your troubles are solved. twhirl allows you to connect with multiple accounts on Twitter, laconi.ca, Friendfeed, and Seesmic. This article will help you begin learning the software as you use it with Twitter. After you have familiarized yourself with it, try some of the others!

Steps

  1. Download Adobe Air. It is necessary to unpack the program for twhirl.
  2. Download twhirl.
  3. Add your account name when the program is ran for the first time. You do not need to put the '@' sign in front of it.
  4. Once you have added your account(s), click on one and then click on connect.
  5. Put in your Twitter password. If you share a computer or are not comfortable with it being in memory, don't have the program 'remember' your password.
    • Once you have logged in, your current tweets will fill up the topmost window. If you don't see one you think you should, there is a scroll bar on the right.

  6. Examine the icons on the very bottom of twirl. They are as follows from left to right:
    • Toggle - you can toggle your message screen on or off
    • Home - whatever other icon you clicked, it resets your screen so you would see it as you would see your Twitter home page.
    • @ - Replies - Click on it if you want to see what replies that you have received.
    • Envelope - Directs - Allows you to see your Direct Messages.
    • Archive - Allows you to see what is in your archive
    • Heart - Allows you to see any tweets you have saved as a favorite
    • Friends/Followers - You can see who is following you with this button.
    • Lookup - A search for wikiHow yielded this result.
    • Do a search on Twitter on a particular subject matter.

  7. Look at the sidebar. It has some nice touches there.
    • Camera - Upload a picture to share with others.
    • Chain/links - Click on this to shorten a URL. Click on it, a dialog window will open for you to type your URL into, then it will become a tinyurl link.
    • The number displayed is the number that you have left to type.
    • Check mark - Basically, the same as the enter key

  8. Hover over a tweet of someone that you would like to respond to. This brings up a little square (over the picture) with the four things you can do with/to/for that follower. The choices are Send Reply, Direct Message, Favor, or Retweet.

And, as I mentioned the design, animation and other skills utilized to create the product are impressive. Per a designer's eyes it's simply stunning!

Now, it would be absolutely wonderful if this level of animation technology skill were applied to some, if not all, of the war stories of the Creator's Bible, depicting good winning over evil. I would buy and watch that again and again!!! Now, that I've seen a bit of Halo: ODST I'll learn more about its history and overall storyline; it may be about good versus evil, too.
